2017-2018 Legislative Priorities

The Legislative Priorities are the issues that Utah PTA feels are our highest legislative priorities for the upcoming legislative session.  They are approved at the September Board of Directors meeting and presented to the membership at the Annual Legislative Advocacy Conference in October.

The Utah PTA 2017-2018 Legislative Priorities

1.    Fully fund ongoing obligations and commitments including student enrollment growth.

2.    5.5% WPU increase which includes 2.5% necessary to maintain current levels of services, with additional funds being used to attract, develop and retain quality educators, reduce class sizes, and support local improvement initiative and programs.

3.    Expand education funding revenues to increase equitable opportunities without devaluing the WPU.

4.    Support legislation that protects each voter’s right to be heard and participate in the election process including redistricting that fairly represents the people.

5.    Mental Health Issues – including homelessness, suicide prevention, substance and opioid abuse, and funding counselors, psychologists, and social workers in schools.

6.    Art, Health, and PE classes are vital for healthy and well rounded students and should be part of the curriculum for all grades Kindergarten through 12th grade.
