Utah PTA has seven areas of focus, which are known as commissions. They are:
Community Involvement, Education, Family Life, Health, Individual Development, Safety and Welfare, and Student Involvement.
Efforts in these areas are headed by a commissioner, and each area has it's own official programs and advocacy efforts for their counterparts at the local level.
For more information about a specific area, please use the links below.
Community Involvement
These programs include an emphasis on National PTA's Standards for Family-School Partnerships, room mother coordination, volunteer recognition, and community sponsors and partners. Utah PTA sponsors statewide Emerging Minority Leadership Development.
Education
The Education Commissioner is a strong supporter of public education and works to maintain the integrity of our public education system. The Education Commissioner will also work to support, build, and enrich the educational process at all levels of PTA.
Family Life
Take Your Family To School Week is a week in February that encourages local PTA units to invite families into the school to feel comfortable and become a partner with the school to ensure student academic success. There are many resources available from National and Utah PTA to help make this program successful.
Health
Utah PTA partners with the Utah Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to sponsor a program entitled "Hope for Tomorrow." This program addresses mental health issues in teens and is presented in Utah secondary schools. Utah PTA promotes programs addressing obesity and physical fitness.
Individual Development
"Reflections," a National PTA program, promotes production of art in eight disciplines with competitions at the local level, with winners advancing to council, region, state, and national levels. Utah PTA promotes character education through the Utah PTA Program "Get Connected" and development of the arts.
Safety and Welfare
Utah PTA partners with the Utah Council for Crime Prevention to educate children on safety issues with the assistance of McGruff, the Crime Dog, and to promote the adoption of McGruff House safe houses in school communities. In addition, Utah PTA partners with UCCP to provide an annual Critical Issues Conference held in November each year providing attendees with information on current safety issues.
Student Involvement
The Student Involvement commission promotes involvement of students in PTSA in the program "Battle of the Bands" (BOB). This program encourages a competition on the region level with region winners competing on a state level. Utah PTA encourages development of student leadership. Just adopted as an official program in 2008 is Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week.
