Welcome to the Utah PTA Public Relations and Marketing page where you will find information and resources to aid in promoting PTA's wonderful programs and activities.

Public Relations Materials

Welcome to the world of Public Relations -- as it relates to the PTA. For many PTA leaders, this may be your first experience with public relations, but in reality if you have spent any time in the PTA 0rganization, you have already been directly involved with public relations.

Public Relations is merely the art of getting word of your organization to your key audiences through a specific medium. This medium may be as simple as the handout a child takes home from school that announces the next PTA meeting or activity. It may be a formal letter to the editor of the local newspaper. It may be inviting the print or broadcast media to cover your fundraising project, recognizing the outstanding teachers and students at your school, or a special event that promotes community awareness in education.

Successful public relations begin with a purpose and is supported by the PTA leadership, school teachers, administrators and PTA volunteers. Now that you have been asked to volunteer your time, talent and energy to this important position, let’s answer two of your most important questions:
      1) What am I supposed to do?
      2) How am I going to do it?

What:

Fox Hollow Elementary School (Lehi) wins National PTA Healthy Lifestyles Award.

Throughout the month of November, PTAs nationwide participate in PTA Healthy Lifestyles Month through activities they have planned to: promote health and wellness through parent involvement in their schools; emphasize the link between involvement and student achievement; and further PTA’s mission. Fox Hollow applied for the award and was the only school in Utah to receive it.

This is the article on the National PTA Website: “National PTA Launches Healthy Lifestyles Month”: http://www.pta.org/3691.htm. The following is an excerpt from the article:

“Every year during Healthy Lifestyles Month, we are seeing new and original ideas created by parents in efforts to prevent childhood obesity by teaching their children how important it is to start living a healthy lifestyle now.” said Charles J. “Chuck” Saylors, National PTA President. “We’re proud to see parents at the grassroots level helping out schools and other parents remember that a healthy child is more likely to succeed.”

This is from Cami Kapp: The story behind the award:

Last year we applied for the award to support our Family Fitness Fair, but we were denied. We did the Fair anyway in May 2009 and it was a HUGE success. We felt that we should try for the award again because the Fair fit the criteria so perfectly except for one detail- the event didn't happen during November "PTA Healthy Lifestyles Month." So this year we applied again, this time with a kick-off event in November as well as the Fair.

Megan Wallgren is the creator of Eat Right Night. She came up with the idea and wrote the proposal and did lots of work to ensure success. Several others have contributed significantly with their creative ideas and expertise. Daniella Dunn has a continual flow of brilliant ideas to make the night fun and Joyce Perkins is a dietitian whose contributions have been substantial. Of course it couldn't happen without all of happy volunteers who have painted, made posters, signs, copies etc.

Melanie Knight is the brains behind the Family Fitness Fair and would be an excellent person to interview. She will be able to give more details about what makes the Family Fitness Fair so successful.

Thank you,
