Artist Statement

What Lies Under the Surface is a fictional retelling of a story based on something that happened in my own life. It follows a girl, the narrator, who lives somewhere where everyone seems perfect. A new girl shows up, and because of her, the narrator eventually learns to accept her own flaws. Brenna, meaning teardrop, is used to represent sorrow or imperfection in some places. Brenna is the imperfections of the narrator personified, and when the narrator learns to accept and apologize to Brenna, she learns to love herself and all of her flaws.
