Understanding the Role

☐ Know the purpose of School Community Councils and the impact of parent participation

☐ Understand that improving student academic performance is the council’s primary responsibility

☐ Learn how to participate in SCC elections as a parent representative

 

Training & Preparation

☐ Complete training on council duties, collaboration, and decision‑making

☐ Review student and school assessment data

☐ Learn how to help develop and revise school action plans

☐ Understand School LAND Trust funding and the laws governing its use

Identify where to find additional resources and clarification

 

Active Participation

☐ Attend SCC meetings consistently

☐ Engage in discussions and contribute to decision‑making

☐ Seek answers and clarification before voting

☐ Serve as chair or vice‑chair, or help nominate qualified candidates (ensuring a parent serves as chair)

 

Representation & Collaboration

☐ Represent the needs of all students at the school

☐ Support parent groups and family engagement in the school community

☐ Encourage parent input on SCC issues and decisions

☐ Promote parent involvement in subcommittees, task forces, and district‑requested initiatives

☐ Collaborate with council members, valuing each person’s skills and expertise

 

Governance & Communication

☐ Support the creation of clear written procedures for elections, notifications, and council operations

☐ Promote rules for parliamentary order, ethical behavior, and civil discourse

☐ Encourage ongoing training for newly elected parent members

☐ Celebrate progress toward council goals with parents

☐ Communicate concerns openly and help share school priorities within the community
